Description

Far from the lost homeworld, a scarred space veteran recounts Earth’s final days to young listeners who have never seen its skies, oceans, or sunlight. They return again and again to the same question: what went wrong? His memories lead back to Professor Kennicot, whose experiments with ultra-short radio waves accidentally attract the attention of beings far beyond the solar system.

The strangers’ first messages are received as voices in the mind, puzzling over humanity’s intelligence and asking whether Earth qualifies as a “Grade Three society.” Soon, other scientists begin experiencing the same impossible communication, forcing them to confront the reality that humanity has been noticed by an advanced civilization. As curiosity turns to uncertainty, the story opens onto a tense encounter between a young scientific world and mysterious visitors whose intentions are anything but clear.

About the author

Robert Zacks

Robert Zacks

A little-known science fiction writer of the 1950s, Robert Zacks imagined futures shaped by absurd laws, dangerous technology, and darkly comic twists. His surviving stories offer a glimpse of the inventive, fast-moving style of classic pulp science fiction.
