Description

A restless youth with an imagination fixed on the sea, he escaped every school and finally convinced his father to send him to naval service. At eighteen he joined the Impérieuse under Lord Cochrane, plunging into a torrent of Mediterranean battles where he witnessed—and helped execute—more than fifty engagements. Wounded repeatedly, yet undaunted, he earned commendations for rescuing shipmates and for daring actions aboard exploding vessels.

The narrative follows his rapid rise through the ranks, charting his courageous leaps from deck to water to save drowning comrades and his bold interventions during a ferocious storm that threatened to shatter the Aeolus. With each episode, the portrait of a bright, fearless officer emerges, revealing the blend of youthful audacity and disciplined skill that would later define his literary voice. Listeners gain a vivid sense of early 19th‑century naval life, from the clang of cannon fire to the precarious grip on rigging in the midst of a gale.
