Description

A flamboyant, self‑deprecating voice introduces us to a humble Tatar prince‑turned‑soldier who has made Paris his unlikely stage. He boasts of his fierce loyalty to the legendary Count Saxe, a man described as the greatest warrior of his age, and recounts wild encounters that range from cutting a rival’s ear to besting a boastful Brandenburg noble with a single swordstroke. The narrator’s humor and candidness paint a vivid portrait of a world where honor is defended with steel, and reputation is everything.

Born in the Marais to a modest notary family, our storyteller finds himself orphaned and penniless by fourteen, forced into the ranks of a Flemish foot‑soldier. After twelve grueling years he is falsely accused of theft and condemned to the firing squad—a fate he faces with grim resignation. In a dramatic turn, the Count Saxe himself rides in, pausing the execution and sparking a new chapter in the narrator’s life that promises both danger and unexpected redemption.
