Transcriber’s Note:
A tight‑knit crew of Philly hustlers—Sammy, Nunzio, Mush and the cerebral lawyer Thinker—run a makeshift bookmaking operation out of a law office. Thinker’s legal legitimacy shields their side bets, letting them attract higher‑rolling gamblers and score a windfall that soon spirals beyond their control. When a notorious bettor, Mickey Tarantino, presses for payment on a $20,000 loss, the gang finds themselves squeezed from both the underworld and the IRS. Their only hope is a quick cash infusion, and the desperate plan points to an unlikely source: a reclusive professor named Cobbett.
The quartet storms Cobbett’s countryside estate, confronting a man whose genteel façade masks deep financial ruin. As they demand the money they need, the encounter forces each of them to weigh loyalty, greed, and the thin line between a clever con and a criminal indictment. The tension of that first desperate showdown sets the tone for a story about ambition, betrayal, and the precarious balance of street smarts against the law.

Best known for writing Psycho, he helped shape modern horror with a style that mixed suspense, dark wit, and a sharp feel for human fears. His stories ranged from pulp magazines to film and television, but they never lost their eerie, intimate edge.
