Description

In the bitter March of 1874 a massive cavalry column set out from Fort Laramie toward the Red Cloud Indian Agency, a flashpoint on the High Plains where the United States hoped a show of force would keep the uneasy peace with the Sioux. The expedition, led by General Sheridan, wrestled with frigid weather and the ever‑present danger that a stray shot could ignite a full‑scale conflict. As soldiers marched across the North Platte, they were forced to balance caution with the looming threat of hostile warriors watching their every move.

Amid this tense backdrop, Dr. J.J. Saville arrives to run the agency, tasked with reorganizing its supplies and establishing order among a diverse crowd of Oglala, Cheyenne, Arapaho and other bands. His attempts to conduct a simple headcount for rations spark fierce resistance, leading to a dramatic showdown where northern warriors briefly detain him before an unexpected intervention averts disaster. Undeterred, Saville tries to win goodwill with a Christmas feast, navigating rivalries, jealous chiefs and restless youths, all while the precarious balance between cooperation and confrontation hangs by a thread.
