Description

The Colorado River stretches through a bewildering maze of sheer walls and hidden valleys, its depths plunging thousands of feet while the surface twists and roars through chasms that few had ever seen. In the years before 1869 the gorge was a realm of rumor and dread, its waters thought to vanish underground and its cliffs believed impassable. The opening pages lay out this formidable landscape in vivid detail, setting the stage for a journey that would transform the American West from mystery to map.

Into that untamed wilderness steps Major John Wesley Powell, a Civil‑War veteran who, despite having lost an arm, resolves to chart the river’s secret course. Drawing on his background as a geologist and teacher, he assembles a small crew and launches from Green River City in late May 1869, confronting raging rapids, hostile terrain, and the ever‑present threat of conflict with native peoples. The narrative follows the expedition’s grueling progress, the camaraderie and losses among the men, and the relentless drive of a man determined to turn an impossible dream into lasting scientific knowledge.
