Description

In the bustling world of mid‑nineteenth‑century London, Arthur Dudley, a country squire turned company secretary, finds himself trapped by a promise of easy profit while the city hums with opportunity. A dubious investor named Mr. Black has lured him into financing the ambitious yet shaky venture known as the Protector, leaving Arthur with mounting bills, a neglected farm, and a house he barely afforded. As the market stalls and his livestock are sold at loss, he wrestles with the bitter realization that his confidence may have been misused.

The pressure builds when board member General Sinclair constantly demands answers, while shareholders swarm Arthur with accusations he cannot satisfy. In a feverish mix of anger and anxiety, he paces his study, replaying the reckless purchase of a Lincoln’s Inn Fields townhouse and the promises that drove him there. Listeners are drawn into his frantic attempts to regain control, setting the stage for choices that could either rescue or ruin him completely. His inner conflict mirrors the larger uncertainties of an era where ambition often outpaced prudence.
