Description

The drama opens in the sacred precinct of Apollo at Delphi, where the tormented Orestes has just killed his mother Clytemnestra. Bloodied and desperate, he finds only a fleeting sanctuary as the relentless Furies—ancient avengers of matricide—close in, their mournful chants echoing his guilt.

Guided by the god Apollo, Orestes is urged to flee to Athens, the city under Athena's patronage. There the exiled prince hopes that the wise goddess will intercede on his behalf, offering both shelter and a chance to confront the divine retribution that pursues him.

In Athens a monumental trial is convened, bringing together the city's citizens, the vengeful Furies, and the protective deity. As arguments rise and the chorus reflects on law, vengeance and mercy, the audience watches the clash of ancient justice with emerging democratic ideals, a tension that will shape the drama's future course.
