everybody knows joe
Joe is a hardworking freelance writer—or at least that’s how he sees himself. He eats too much, avoids the article he promised to write, lectures librarians, and drifts through New York from one convenient excuse to the next, while an exasperated voice inside his head criticizes every move. Their bickering is funny, familiar, and just a little too intimate.
But Joe’s inner companion is more than a guilty conscience. As the day unfolds through library research, automat meals, and an evening visit with Maggie, the uneasy question of who is really in control begins to take shape. Beneath the comic portrait of an overconfident, underachieving young man lies a tense psychological tale about divided identity, buried impulses, and the frightening possibility that everyone carries a stranger within.
