Description

Evangeline's diary opens on a chilly November day in Branches Park, where a striking young woman with vivid red hair records her thoughts on becoming an “adventurer” of society. Orphaned and recently left the care of the formidable Mrs. Carruthers, she reflects on a life without steady income but full of self‑esteem and ambition. Although she has inherited a modest fortune, the legacy is tangled in vague promises and an unsettled will. With a sharp eye for fashion and a keen sense of irony, she sets the tone for her own story.

Yet the prospect of marriage looms large. Mrs. Carruthers has arranged for Evangeline to wed a distant diplomat, a man of thirty‑plus years whose name is known but whose presence is rare. The young narrator weighs the appeal of wealth and a comfortable home against her desire to pursue education, travel, and a love of literature. Her candid, witty musings reveal a restless spirit determined to shape her future on her own terms.
