Description

Set in the gentle shade of an oak‑lined estate just after the Civil War, the story opens with the Dinsmore family gathered in a bright, breezy garden. Young Rose and Adelaide share whispered confidences while their brother loses himself in a book, and little Elsie toddles between her mother’s arms and her father’s affectionate grasp. The tranquil scene is shattered when Horace returns with unsettling news: a long‑awaited arrangement threatens to separate Elsie from the family she loves. The revelation sparks fierce protests from her brother and a storm of emotions that ripple through the household.

Through tender dialogue and vivid description, the novel explores the clash between personal desire and societal expectations in a time of national healing. As the Dinsmores grapple with love, duty, and the lingering shadows of a divided nation, listeners are drawn into a world where every decision carries the weight of history and the promise of a new future.
