A towering figure with the look of a carved wooden statue, Pellini wanders the city streets like a living clock. His broad, flat shoulders and long, swinging sleeves make him impossible to miss, while his Italian roots are softened by years spent in France, where he now oversees a button factory. The narrator first notices him not in a workshop but in the crowded market, where his steady stride and peculiar hat draw curious glances from passersby.
Their paths cross in a field where Pellini, in a sudden burst of frustration, chases after an elusive hare. The narrator joins the frantic search, and the two men—one massive and solemn, the other modest and observant—share a moment of absurd camaraderie amid the tall grasses. Over tobacco and wine, they trade stories, easing Pellini’s anger and laying the groundwork for a friendship that promises many more strange adventures.

A key voice in Catalan modernism, he is best remembered for vivid, unsentimental fiction rooted in both the natural world and the social tensions of his time. His best-known novel, Josafat, helped secure his place as one of the major Catalan writers of the early 20th century.
