Description

The volume opens with a vivid portrait of mid‑nineteenth‑century life on the Hungarian plain, where the fields are rich but the shelves are barren. It sketches how newspapers and modest publications struggled to reach the towns of Debrecen, Szeged and beyond, and it makes a compelling case for a cultural revival driven by local drama and literature. The author’s earnest appeal to restore regional journals and to mobilise the younger generation sets a thoughtful tone for the whole collection.

Later chapters turn to the stage, presenting a five‑act tragedy titled Vetélytársak by the little‑known dramatist Horváth Cyrill. The play blends lofty Germanic heroic tropes with distinctly Hungarian character types, offering a colourful mix of knights, wise hermits and plaintive maidens. Alongside the drama, the author offers insightful commentary on the challenges of publishing, the need for quality theatrical works, and the broader goal of using drama to forge a stronger national spirit.
