A lone narrator carries the echo of a haunting song that once marked a desperate trek through a Mexican thicket, where friends fell to thirst, snakes, and fever. The verses linger, painting a bleak landscape of sand, maguey, and vultures, and hint at a lingering guilt that binds the speaker to the bush forever. This lyrical prelude sets a tone of loss and lingering memory that colors everything that follows.
Into this somber backdrop we meet Elfego, an eighteen‑year‑old Mexican boy who joins the foreman Toribio on a morning mission to round up stray mules for an American rancher. The description of the high plateau, the thick brush, and the hidden cliff creates a vivid sense of danger as the youths chase the unruly animals through the grass. When Elfego’s horse suddenly reels back at the edge of the slope, he is thrown head‑first into the air, leaving his fate uncertain and the tension palpable.
