Ed has grown accustomed to hearing his old friend George complain about his marriage. George is a brilliant surgeon with steady hands and an easygoing nature, but his wife Helen has become a deeply unpleasant hypochondriac, obsessed with medicines, illnesses, and replacing her own body parts. Her latest operation—a grafted leg—leaves Ed shaken, while George seems trapped between disgust at her personality and an enduring fascination with her body.
George refuses to consider divorce, insisting that Helen is still physically perfect for him even though she has changed into someone he can barely tolerate. As his drinking and frustration increase, Ed worries that the strain will affect George’s work and judgment. Then George calls with startling news: Helen has changed again, and he wants Ed to come over and see for himself. What begins as an uncomfortable marital complaint soon points toward a far stranger solution to a seemingly impossible problem.
