The day awakens over a sprawling industrial city, its smokestacks breathing clouds that catch the sunrise and turn them to gold. In a sun‑lit office, young engineer Henry Sanford scans a telegram announcing the arrival of a remarkable sloop—a light, sturdy craft essential to his newest lighthouse project. His excitement ripples through the room as he envisions the work that will soon begin on the treacherous waters of Shark’s Ledge.
Sanford’s plan calls for massive granite blocks to form an underwater barrier protecting an artificial island from surf and ice, each block to be lowered by a diver from a vessel in a six‑mile‑per‑hour current. The Lighthouse Board has questioned the feasibility, but the contract rests on Sanford’s ingenuity and the sloop Captain Joe has finally secured. Together they face the looming technical test, balancing ambition with the raw power of the sea.
