In the sun‑drenched bustle of Chepe, a river city teeming with caravans, market stalls and a tangled stream of coaches, the air crackles with bawdy banter and fierce competition. Drivers hurl ribald verses at each other while an anxious matron clutches her modest wages, a miserly banker eyes another fortune, and mischievous street urchins spice the melee with their own sharp jokes. Through it all, a wandering philosopher observes the chaotic parade, his thoughts drifting between the timeless ideas of love and the fleeting desires of the crowd.
Amid the clamor stands a solitary shop whose facade bears a crudely carved figure of a Black slave, feathers and plumage fluttering in a silent, unsettling chorus. Inside, cheap colonial sugar—marked “ONLY 6 1⁄2d.”—lies in bright tins that hint at the darker economies behind the city’s glittering displays. The story launches with this vivid tableau, setting the stage for a satirical yet heartfelt exploration of ambition, affection, and the hidden costs of progress.
