Description

A quiet hill near Salem holds the remains of an extravagant pleasure house, built by a pre-Revolutionary magnate whose ambition earned the place its enduring nickname. From the ridge, the narrator surveys the New England coast on one side and a patchwork of farms, families, quarrels, and graves on the other, reflecting on how small private lives appear within a wider landscape.

But the abandoned mansion has a history more unsettling than its ruined walls suggest. Shaken by an earthquake, relocated down the hill, and left furnished for an owner who never returned from exile, it eventually became a playground for schoolboys and wanderers. One locked closet, however, inspired such dread that no one dared disturb it—until a group of boys, armed with curiosity and trembling courage, forced the door and encountered a startling vision of the past. This atmospheric tale blends local memory, vanished grandeur, and supernatural mystery in a distinctly haunting New England setting.
