A quiet Budapest house holds a tangled web of affection and unease. The young narrator clings to her mother’s love while keeping a wary distance from a stern stepfather and a boisterous brother whose antics leave her feeling invisible. Days drift between the clatter of the courtyard and the hushed, restless wanderings of a mother who searches the rooms for something she cannot name. Into this fragile world arrives Bözsi, a shy girl in a white skirt and a painted hat, whose presence is announced like a soft sigh.
Bözsi brings with her a small troupe of orphaned children, each in need of gentle care, and she tends to them with a quiet steadiness that touches even the hardest hearts. The mother watches the tender scene unfold, her tears speaking of long‑suppressed grief, while the narrator feels an unfamiliar mix of jealousy and wonder. As Bözsi’s calm gestures turn the house’s gloom into a tentative hope, the children begin to see the possibility of a new, though uncertain, family rhythm.
