The crew of an Earth survey ship touches down on Waterfield’s Planet, a seemingly endless desert punctuated by regular oases fed by hidden rivers. Led by the self‑assured psychologist Bruckner, the team is greeted by a tribe dressed in multicoloured ribbons, their chief seated on a throne carried by followers. A bizarre, seven‑foot creature emerges from a wooden box, waddling like a pin‑shaped bird and delivering three thunderous, duck‑like burps that send the astronauts into uncontrollable laughter.
The moment of shared humor masks a deeper clash of expectations; Bruckner’s polished protocol meets a native sense of dignity, and the crew wonders whether their polite act will be seen as strength or weakness. Earlier reports speak of friendly contacts turning sour, and the astronauts sense that today’s ceremony may be only the first step in a more complicated relationship. Listeners are invited to follow the uneasy alliance as cultural pride, misunderstanding, and the oddities of an alien world collide.
