Description

Through the eyes of a seasoned animal catcher, the listener is taken deep into the African steppe and jungle during the early twentieth century. The narrator, once a representative for the Hagenbeck zoo, recounts the daily rhythm of tracking rhinoceroses, hippos, giraffes and zebras across vast plains and winding rivers. Rather than a conventional hunting tale, the story focuses on the logistics of safely securing these giants for transport to European menageries.

The account is enriched by more than eighty period illustrations that bring each expedition to life, while the straightforward prose reveals the cruelty and awe intertwined in the work. Readers hear about the challenges of navigating dense forests, negotiating with local guides, and observing animal behavior that was little known at the time. Its blend of personal adventure and useful natural‑history notes makes it a rare window onto a vanished chapter of wildlife collection.
