THE DEAD TREE’S DAY.
The story opens on a warm July morning beside Bearcamp Water, where a lone traveler sets out to explore a hidden New Hampshire swamp. As gentle rain tap‑taps the meadow, the air fills with the chorus of whippoorwills, veeries and other forest birds, each call urging the narrator deeper into the wetlands. The prose paints the swamp’s wild roses, shy orchids and glossy ferns in such detail that listeners can almost feel the cool moss beneath their feet.
Suddenly a thunderstorm sweeps in, turning the quiet glade into a dramatic concert of wind, rain and rattling tree‑tops. The storm awakens the colors of the birch, ash and yellow birch, while the veil of rain sharpens every leaf and lichen, creating a vivid, almost tactile tableau. Yet even as the sky roars, the narrator moves forward, guided by the lingering song of the veery and a sense of quiet wonder at the swamp’s untamed beauty.
