CHAPTER X
Jem Hardy returns to Sunwich Port after a long absence, only to find the town familiar yet subtly altered. The old faces he once knew are now reshaped by time, while the younger generation has blossomed into adulthood, most strikingly in the form of the enchanting Kate Nugunt, whose presence haunts his thoughts. As he wanders the streets, visits the draper’s shop, and sits beneath an apple tree, Jem becomes convinced that he must intervene in the budding romance between Kate and the town’s new doctor, Murchison.
Guided by a whimsical list of errands—learning Kate’s tastes, meeting her friends, and outmaneuvering the doctor—Jem’s determination turns his quiet life into a lively game of strategy. The narrative captures his restless energy, the humor of his partner Swann’s bewilderment, and the gentle charm of a seaside community where old grudges and fresh infatuations intertwine. Listeners will be drawn into Jem’s earnest, if slightly mischievous, quest for love amidst the evolving rhythm of Sunwich Port.

Best known for the chilling classic "The Monkey’s Paw," this English storyteller had a gift for mixing everyday life with suspense, humor, and a strong sense of place. Much of his work grew out of the dockside world he knew as a boy along the Thames.
