On a windswept plain in the Dács region, a lone whitewashed house stands amid a sparse acacia grove. Its owner, a quiet, dignified woman with pale skin and thoughtful eyes, keeps a modest life: a wattle‑and‑daub pantry, a small garden where chickens peck, and a wall‑mounted drying rack for linens. Though the surroundings are stark, she fills the rooms with the latest Parisian newspapers and the works of French writers, earning the nickname “Arianna” from amused locals who find her air both enigmatic and gentle.
Arianna, once married to a traveling magistrate, chose a calm separation that remains surprisingly cordial; they still exchange brief, polite letters. She maintains good, if distant, relations with the neighboring farmers, rarely venturing beyond the bounds of her homestead except for evening walks around the pantry. When a pair of hunters unexpectedly arrives seeking shelter, the encounter reveals the delicate balance between her isolated routine and the occasional intrusion of the wider world.
