Description

The story opens on a bleak autumn in 408 AD, when the Alpine passes are criss‑crossed with the restless tracks of Goths marching toward Italy. The narrator paints a stark landscape of rain‑slicked cliffs, abandoned bridges and a lonely, dark lake that seems to echo the empire’s growing gloom. Against this backdrop the first stirrings of conflict are already felt, as Roman outposts strain under the weight of an approaching tide of steel and desperation.

Into this world lives a young Roman woman, Antonina, whose life is bound up with the fate of a crumbling city and the strangers at its gates. Through her eyes we glimpse daily struggles—family loyalties, forbidden encounters, and the uneasy balance between survival and honor. Her personal journey mirrors the larger upheaval, offering a vivid portrait of ordinary people navigating the chaos of an empire on the brink of collapse.
