A storm of discord has settled over the Oblonsky household. The lady of the house has learned that her husband has been seeing a French governess, and she has declared that she can no longer share the same roof with him. For three days the tension has rippled through every room, leaving the children to wander the corridors alone while the prince remains absent. The marriage, once a familiar rhythm, now feels like a fragile truce on the brink of collapse.
Prince Stefan Oblonsky, known as Stiva, wakes in the early morning haunted by his own culpability. He replays the harsh words he has spoken to his wife and wonders whether any apology could mend the breach he helped create. In the midst of his turmoil a telegram arrives: his sister Anna, a woman of poise and insight, is coming the next day. Her presence promises the possibility of mediation, but the family must first confront the raw wounds that have festered in the silence.

Best known for War and Peace and Anna Karenina, this towering Russian novelist wrote with unusual clarity about family life, history, faith, and the moral struggles of ordinary people. His books are grand in scale but deeply human, which is why they still feel alive more than a century later.
