CHAPTER I. - ON THE ROAD.
CHAPTER II. - WAYSIDE HOSPITALITY.
CHAPTER III. - CROSSING THE "RUNS."
CHAPTER IV. - POOR WHITES.
A Northern visitor finds himself thrust into the uneasy calm of the South just as the secession movement gains momentum. On a long carriage ride with a cultured South Carolina colonel and his long‑serving servant, Jim, the narrator experiences the stark contrasts of genteel hospitality and the everyday lives of enslaved laborers, sharing cramped inns and open‑floor blankets that force an intimate, if uneasy, exchange of viewpoints.
Arriving by steamer at the sleepy port of Georgetown, the traveler is greeted not by bustling crowds but by a handful of laborers who hint at the looming violence that will soon scar the region. Their dark humor and candid remarks offer a raw glimpse into the mindset of a community on the brink, while the narrator’s observations paint a vivid portrait of a landscape where cotton, turpentine and uncertainty hang in the humid air. The opening pages set a tone of curious dialogue and subtle tension, inviting listeners to step into a world where personal connections clash with the gathering storm of war.

Known to many readers as Edmund Kirke, this 19th-century American writer turned firsthand observation of the Civil War era into vivid books about the South, politics, and national life. He also moved in the orbit of Abraham Lincoln, giving his work an unusual closeness to the events of his time.
