Description

In the quiet, windswept hills of Cornwall, ordinary lives are suddenly pulled into the vortex of a world at war. As news of the conflict spreads through St. Ia, the town’s fishermen and farmers set aside their daily routines, answering the call to defend their nation. Amid the clamor of recruitment posters and the solemn oath to honor Britain’s word, the story centers on a young Oxford graduate, Bob Nancarrow, and his longtime friend Nancy Tresize, whose bond has always hovered between camaraderie and unspoken yearning.

Bob’s plan for an afternoon drive to the dramatic cliffs of Gurnard’s Head becomes a hopeful prelude to a confession he has carried for years. While the rugged coastline offers breathtaking scenery, his thoughts are dominated by the chance to reveal his heart to the “fairest girl in a county of fair women.” As the first wave of enlistments begins, both Bob and Nancy must confront how love can survive—and perhaps be reshaped—by the looming uncertainty of a war that has only just begun.
