Description

A young boy named Paul grows up on the windswept shores of Kirkcaple, where red cliffs and a white‑sand beach frame his world. With his friends Archie, Tam and a handful of other local lads, they turn hidden sea caves into pirate hideouts, swapping ordinary catches for grand tales of Captain Kidd and Morgan. Their daily rites—sneaking out after services, lighting makeshift fires, and daring each other into the deep pools—forge a bond of daring that feels both timeless and intimate.

Those early adventures plant a restless curiosity that soon reaches beyond the familiar coastline. As the boys dream of distant lands and buried riches, Paul finds himself drawn toward a promise of far‑off horizons, where the mysteries of Africa and a fabled kingdom beckon. The story follows his first steps out of the familiar tide, setting the stage for a journey that will test the loyalty and courage first learned on Kirkcaple’s rocky shores.
