Description

Marjory moves through a quiet, snow‑laden university hall, her thoughts heavy as she approaches her father’s study—a cluttered sanctuary of manuscripts, maps and a lone clock ticking among the papers. The professor, a solitary scholar lost in a labyrinth of language, reacts to her presence with irritation before his curiosity is sparked by the gravity in her voice. She takes a seat by the window, the campus outside alive with students tossing snowballs, and gathers the courage to share a startling piece of news.

She tells him she intends to marry Rufus Coleman, the charismatic Sunday editor of a prominent newspaper, and the revelation sets off a clash of worlds. The father’s mind, accustomed to abstract theories and academic rigor, wrestles with the idea of his daughter choosing a life that seems far removed from the intellectual elite he reveres. Their conversation hints at deeper questions about love, ambition, and the expectations that bind a family together.
