Description

Born on fishing boats, he runs away to the sea, taking a job on a humble tug. A harsh apprenticeship on a tramp steamer ends with a collision that throws him ashore at Durban in 1895, where the promise of untamed lands beckons. He then treks inland, joining a railway crew and later the Matabeleland Mounted Police, each step pulling him deeper into East Africa's interior.

In the Wa‑Kikuyu plains his skill in trade and willingness to share supplies win the trust of the warriors, who begin to see him as more than a passing foreigner. When a rival caravan threatens the fragile food line for the new Uganda Railway, he offers to negotiate safe passage, risking his life to broker peace between armed traders and the community. His daring actions and ability to move between worlds earn him a ceremonial Kikuyu title, hinting at an unprecedented role that blurs the line between outsider and ruler.
