Description

An exhausted Englishman arrives in the wilds of California, intent on meeting his fiancée at a remote mountain hotel. The journey from bustling New York to the treacherous, mist‑cloaked redwoods leaves him rattled, and when his train finally stops, he must trek through untamed terrain on foot. Along the way he encounters a weather‑worn local with a sharp tongue, whose blunt humor and unexpected generosity hint at the colorful characters that populate this frontier.

The story captures the clash between refined Victorian manners and the raw, unpredictable spirit of the American West. As Clive navigates steep canyons, rattling trestles, and the eerie glow of lanterns beneath towering redwoods, he is forced to confront his own doubts about love, duty, and the notion of “civilized” conduct. The early chapters set a vivid stage for a journey that is as much about inner discovery as it is about reaching a distant hotel.
