Kenrick Holt is a solitary clerk whose routine has left him with little more than distant relatives and a string of dead‑end jobs. When an invitation from a brother falls through, he finds himself stuck in a drab town and longing for a change of scenery. A chance conversation at his club introduces a fellow escapee who points him toward a hidden coastal haven on the Dorsetshire coast.
Together they board an early train and arrive at Whiddlecombe Regis, a picture‑perfect village perched on cliffs of heather and gorse, with a lofty church tower and a glittering sea beyond. The salty air, quiet streets, and simple inn promise the break Kenrick has been craving. As they settle in, the reader is drawn into the gentle rhythms of a seaside holiday, the tentative bonds forming between strangers, and the subtle stirrings of a life that might finally begin to feel less solitary.
