The listener is led into the Catskill Mountains, where mist‑clad peaks rise above rushing waterfalls and deep, wooded valleys. From the quiet mouth of Plauterkill Clove the narrator describes the towering South Peak and its ancient forest as a living cathedral, capturing sunrise on a mirror‑still lake and the raw power of midnight storms.
With a poet friend, he sets out in rough clothing to scale the steep face of South Peak, aiming to spend a night on its summit and greet the first light. Their climb threads through tangled thickets, slippery cascades and a hidden cavern called Hunter’s Hole, each obstacle rendered in vivid, tactile detail that brings the effort to life. Along the way they hear the distant call of hawks and feel the mountain’s wind whisper ancient stories, deepening the sense of communion with the wild.

1819–1895
An energetic 19th-century man of letters, he mixed literary work with public service, travel, and a lifelong interest in American life and landscapes. His books and sketches grew out of a career that moved easily between journalism, libraries, government offices, and the outdoors.
