Description

A roving naval commission takes listeners into the chaotic aftermath of Haiti’s struggle for freedom, where French colonial ambitions clash with a desperate, blood‑soaked uprising. The island is painted as a place of relentless violence, a “saturnalia of massacre” that has left every side—white colonists, black insurgents, and mixed‑race mulattoes—caught in a vortex of retaliation and ruin. The narrative sets a stark backdrop of crumbling plantations, famine, and a desperate need for order, hinting at the larger forces that will shape the young sailor’s journey.

At the heart of the story is Nathaniel, a quick‑witted, good‑natured teenager serving aboard the frigate Orpheus. Known affectionately as “Nat,” he navigates the cramped decks and rough‑and‑tumble banter of his shipmates while confronting the mystery of his own name. Early on, Nat’s first clash—a gritty fight with a bloodhound‑like adversary—introduces his courage and the perilous world he is about to traverse, promising a blend of daring action and moral complexity that will keep listeners hooked.
