CHAPTER VIII. - SHIRÁZ—BUSHIRE.
In a sumptuous palace in Tiflis, the narrator finds himself amid glittering rugs, tame tigers and frozen windows, listening to a weary governor who warns that any overland trek to India must skirt the Russian bureaucracy. The atmosphere of lavish Oriental décor gives way to a restless desire to break through snow‑bound streets and head south, where the true adventure beckons across the Caspian Sea and the stark deserts of Persia.
From the icy sleigh ride out of the Caucasus, the story follows a caravan of horse‑drawn wagons, desert caravansaries and bustling market towns. Along the way the traveler records the colors of Baluchistan’s tents, the music of Persian dancers and the stark beauty of arid horizons, all illustrated by sketches that bring the landscape to life. The first act sets a tone of curiosity and determination, promising a richly detailed cross‑cultural odyssey.
