Description

Set in the ancient kingdom of Samaria, this poetic drama opens within a royal palace where Queen Jezebel, a foreign princess turned ruler, confronts a city on the brink of revolt. The king, Ahab, has just brokered a controversial peace with the Syrians, angering his people and fueling whispers of betrayal over a stubborn farmer’s vineyard. As tension mounts, Jezebel summons her distant son, Prince Ahaziah, hoping his arrival will restore order.

Meanwhile, a scheming prophet and the ambitious captain Jehu plot to exploit the unrest, seeing the upcoming feast for the defiant farmer Naboth as a chance to ignite war and seize power. Their conspiratorial verses intertwine with the queen’s desperate prayers, drawing listeners into a clash of loyalty, faith, and ambition. The first act sets the stage for a lyrical tragedy where personal vendettas and political machinations threaten to unravel the royal family.
