In the sweltering September of 1843, three gaunt, elderly beggars trudge the dusty road toward Bosznia, their ragged clothes and trembling frames bearing the weight of hunger, thirst and countless hardships. Speaking a mixture of French, Slavic and Turkish, they linger in a cramped, half‑ruined hut where locals whisper of a mysterious cargo being ferried through the nearby village. With no money, no papers and the swollen river guarded by soldiers, the trio learns that the usual crossing at Szava is blocked, leaving them with few options but to improvise.
As night falls, the three men slip into a hidden boat, their breath shallow and hearts pounding, only to be spotted by armed riders who open fire from the riverbank. In a frantic scramble, they cling to each other and the vessel, drifting downstream while bullets whizz past. Their desperate dash for the opposite shore sets the stage for a tense struggle for survival, inviting listeners to follow their harrowing journey through a forgotten corner of Hungarian history.

Best remembered as the lawyer who defended the accused in the 1883 Tiszaeszlár blood libel case, he also wrote lively, reflective prose about Hungarian public life and memory. His work blends the voice of a seasoned advocate with the warmth of a gifted storyteller.
