Description

A modestly prosperous family is thrown into crisis when the quiet, book‑loving patriarch meets an abrupt, tragic end on a country railway. His death leaves his wife and three children to confront the sudden loss of both a steady income and the gentle steadiness he provided. The household, accustomed to careful budgeting and simple comforts, now faces a future that must be built from the modest insurance payout and the few savings they have left.

Determined to preserve their dignity, the family rejects outside charity and decides to manage their own affairs. The eldest daughter, Jenny, gathers the siblings for a practical meeting, weighing the options of modest investments against the risks of over‑reaching. As they plot a humble enterprise to sustain themselves, the story explores the resilience of ordinary people confronting unexpected change, balancing hope with the harsh realities of early‑twentieth‑century domestic life.
