A Dog Day; or, The Angel in the House
A Dog Day
A pampered little dog wakes to discover that he has become the household’s hero after thwarting a nighttime burglar—though from his own account, the rescue was largely an accidental interruption to a pleasant snack. His sudden celebrity brings kisses, ribbons, admiration, and very little improvement to his daily routine. A bath, a suspicious cat, an irresistible patch of mud, and an opportunity to redecorate an old maid’s bed soon restore his sense of purpose.
Told as a candid daybook, this playful story follows one energetic canine through meals, mischief, family politics, and the constant struggle to preserve his dignity. He observes the humans with sharp, comic impatience, cherishes the kindness of one young admirer, and regards cleanliness as an outrageous imposition. Packed with lively episodes and a wonderfully self-important narrator, it offers a charming glimpse into domestic life from a dog’s thoroughly biased point of view.
