A deputy was king
In the bright afterglow of 1921, Toni Rakonitz is enjoying her first true holiday after two demanding years building a dress-making business. Resting beside a duck pond in her cousin Richard’s garden, she indulges in a playful fantasy: that a tall, conventional hero might appear to rescue the afternoon from its quietness. Instead, five men approach across the lawn—an amusingly extravagant answer to a young woman’s modest wish.
Among them is Giles, whose first glimpse of Toni catches her laughing at the absurdity of it all. The visitors include a neighboring landowner and his sons, each carrying the marks of a familiar English world of country houses, horses, clubs, and inherited expectations. As Toni’s lively independence meets this gathering of contrasting personalities, an apparently carefree afternoon opens onto questions of love, marriage, family authority, and the changing social order after the war. With wit, warmth, and a keen eye for human behavior, the story follows the pleasures and complications that arise when private wishes collide with public roles.
