Description

In the spring of 1915, a seasoned bureaucrat known as Sir Charles Repton climbs into his breakfast routine in a grand house overlooking Hyde Park. As Warden of the Court of Dowry and a Cabinet minister, he occupies a seat at the heart of wartime Britain, juggling parliamentary duties, industrial interests, and a network of clients who depend on his counsel. The opening paints a portrait of a man whose polished exterior—white hair, sharp eyes, and meticulous habits—hides a restless mind seeking more than the comforts of wealth.

Yet beneath the orderly surface, the morning’s quiet rituals—reading The Times, sorting letters, and noting a lone egg on his plate—reveal an obsession with control that will soon be tested. A mysterious figure named George Mulross Demaine looms on the periphery, hinting at financial maneuverings that could draw Repton into dangerous territory. As the nation braces for the pressures of war, the reader is invited to watch a seasoned politician balance public duty, private ambition, and the subtle threats gathering around his seemingly secure world.
