The Authoritarian Playbook

Protect Democracy's June 2022 report examines seven tactics used by aspiring authoritarians and offers journalists a framework for distinguishing threats to democracy from ordinary political conflict. Jennifer Dresden, Aaron Baird, and Ben Raderstorf draw on examples from the United States and other countries, with practical suggestions for reporting on each tactic. The examples and assessments reflect the report's original publication date.
