The Black Bag

On a bleak April afternoon in 1906, a twenty‑five‑year‑old artist named Philip Kirkwood finds himself utterly alone in London, penniless and cut off from the family he left behind in America. As desperation settles in, a mysterious, almost spectral presence—dubbed the Shade of Care—materializes at his elbow, offering a grim companionship. Kirkwood, equal parts bewildered and defiant, grudgingly accepts this unsettling guest, aware that his fortunes may now hinge on the strange alliance.

With little more than a pipe and a burning scrap of paper for comfort, he sets out to navigate the city's underbelly, seeking work, shelter, and any clue that might lift the veil of his misfortune. Along the way he encounters a cast of eccentric characters—a flamboyant madame, a cryptic carriage driver, and a pair of dubious adventurers—each offering a glimpse of danger and possibility. As the Shade of Care whispers its relentless taunts, Kirkwood’s resolve is tested, hinting at a series of daring escapades that could either redeem or ruin him.
