Description

In the sweltering September afternoon the vineyards cling to the southern slopes of the Küchelberg, their tangled vines forming dark green tunnels that swallow the light. A heavy, still heat hangs over the valley, broken only by the occasional soft murmur of sap boiling in the grapes. The landscape is almost deserted, save for lizards slipping among the ivy‑covered walls and the distant hum of far‑off farms. The air is thick with the scent of ripe fruit and earth, creating a world that feels both timeless and isolated.

Amid this quiet stands a lone young wine‑keeper, dressed in the traditional garb of the “Saltner”: a sleeveless leather jacket, brass‑studded straps, white‑stitched stockings, and a towering hat festooned with feathers and animal tails. He carries a hefty halberd, a symbol of his authority over the rows of vines he is sworn to protect. Though the estate owners offer wine and food to keep his spirits up, the boy remains withdrawn, his thoughts as dark as the shadows that linger between the vines.
