In a quiet Saxon village, Ulrich Nebendahl spends his days shaping wheels and mending carts, a solitary figure content with his craft. The local pastor, a kindly but meddlesome man, believes it is his duty to see Ulrich's children wed respectable partners, and he pushes the wheelwright toward marriage. Torn between practicality and genuine affection, Ulrich wrestles with the question of how one truly knows love.
When Ulrich meets the shy, dimple‑handed Elsa on the river bridge, a sudden warmth flickers in his heart, and he imagines a future built on devotion rather than duty. Their brief conversation awakens a fierce protectiveness, hinting at the hardships that war and wandering soldiers may bring to their peaceful valley. As the day ends, Ulrich finds himself at a crossroads, unsure whether to follow the pastor’s counsel or listen to his own emerging feelings.

Best remembered for the comic classic Three Men in a Boat, this English writer had a gift for turning everyday mishaps into warm, sharp humor. His work helped make late-Victorian comedy feel lively, modern, and very human.
