In the waning years of the eighteenth century a small band of French aristocrats, led by the ambitious Count Vignerolles, arrives in the untamed lower Mississippi valley. Granted vast tracts of land by the Spanish crown, they hope to turn the wild frontier into a prosperous plantation, but their inexperience quickly puts them at odds with the harsh wilderness.
During a hunting expedition the party is caught in a sudden prairie fire and, barely conscious, is swept into a tangled cypress swamp. There they are rescued by an enigmatic old American named Nathan, who guides them through a maze of smoky waters and towering trees. His cryptic warnings and the eerie, smoke‑filled landscape set the tone for a perilous journey where every turn could mean safety—or disaster.
As they press onward, the newcomers must navigate unfamiliar terrain, confront hostile forces, and decide whether to trust the strange ally who seems to know the swamp’s hidden passages. Their struggle to survive becomes a clash of cultures and ambitions, promising a vivid portrait of frontier life.
