A young clerk in a Washington office receives a terse, urgent summons from his enigmatic chief: board the next train to New York, dress as a gentleman of leisure, and be ready for a secret dinner. The hurried orders thrust him into the world of covert work, where a simple change of clothes becomes a badge of trust and a test of his ambition.
Arriving at the upscale Cosmopolis Hotel under the alias John Burnham, he is drawn into a discreet gathering hosted by a renowned code‑breaker. An intercepted, ciphered message of national importance has fallen into the hands of a shadowy figure, and the young operative is tasked with retrieving it before it can be exploited. With limited resources, a tight deadline, and the ever‑present danger of exposure, he must rely on his wits, his training, and the help of the mysterious guests to safeguard the secret before the night ends.
