A curious twelve‑year‑old boy sits with his mother, eager to hear the legendary tale of his great‑grandfather, a brilliant chemist who uncovered a strange new metal called Rovolon. That discovery fuels the first ever star‑ship, the Skylark, and draws the greedy World Steel Corporation into a deadly game of espionage and sabotage. With a cunning spy named Perkins and the ruthless Dr. DuQuesne in pursuit, the early adventure spirals into explosions, betrayals, and a frantic chase across space.
The story follows Seaton and his partner Crane as they race against their enemies, using a mysterious object‑compass that always points to the target they most need to find. Their flight takes them to primitive worlds teeming with dinosaurs, poisonous atmospheres, and even societies of pure intellect that can appear and disappear at will. Along the way they salvage precious resources, rescue loved ones, and begin to rebuild their ship, setting the stage for ever larger exploits among the glittering suns of the Central System.
