In the waning days of February 1850, the yacht Falcon drifts in a glassy expanse between the Canary and Madeira islands. Lord Featherstone, weary of English society, has taken a handful of friends—Oxenden, Dr. Congreve, and the industrious Melick—on a leisurely winter cruise. With the wind dead and the sea unnervingly still, the crew’s boredom turns to playful competition as Melick folds bright paper boats for an impromptu regatta, inviting bets and laughs from the idle passengers.
The harmless diversion soon uncovers something far more curious: a copper cylinder bobbing beneath the surface, its lid sealed tight and its contents hinted at by a faint, metallic clang. Inside lies a manuscript written in an unfamiliar hand, filled with cryptic symbols and references to distant lands. As the men grapple with the mystery, the quiet of the sea gives way to a growing sense of adventure, promising discoveries that could reshape their understanding of history.
